Choosing the Perfect Sofa

Our designers have put together their thoughts to help you choose your perfect sofa. We will help you choose a couch that fits into your lifestyle, that will stand the test of time, and that enhances the style and comfort of your room. And if you can’t decide which lounge suite you like, just let us know and we will throw in a second choice as well, so you can view them in your own home. Have a look on our sofa sale page - you may just find the perfect armchair to fill that empty corner.

Classic

If you like timeless, traditional couches with softer lines, turned arms or high backs, then your style is probably classic. Create a simplistic, peaceful atmosphere by choosing neutral lines and introduce accents in patterned rugs, scatter cushions and dramatic artwork.

Contemporary

If you find yourself gravitating towards modern clean lines with minimalist designs then you probably prefer a contemporary feel. Look for sofas with square arms or, if you want a more relaxed look, go for thicker arms. Add texture with soft furnishings and keep accessories to a minimum for spacious inner-city cool.

Eclectic

Do you like mixing and matching different styles and colours to make your place more homely and interesting? If so, you probably have more of an eclectic taste. This allows you to pick a lounge suite that you love, and then build the rest of the room around it. Create a fresh, edgy feel by combining bold upholstery with muted walls, and floors that imitate the concrete and bricks of city life.

Fabric & colour

We generally recommend selecting neutral colours and simple patterns. They will allow your furniture to blend in with the décor, and let you add vibrant accents with contrasting or, if you prefer, matching cushions. These can be changed whenever you feel like updating your look.

Light coloured couches blend into the surrounds of your home and make a room seem larger.

If you want to be brave and make a statement, go with a strong colour, but if you do so, consider buying a sofa with simpler lines. And you never know - you might just find it on our sofa sale page!

What's the shape and size of your room?

Measure the room, especially the wall against which you will place your sofa. You also need to make sure your sofa will be able to fit through doorways, into lifts and up tight stairs.

Make sure the size of your sofa doesn't overpower the room or impede the flow of traffic. You can find measurements for each of our sofas, armchairs and sofa beds in the technical details section on each product page. Simply click on any lounge or sofa image on the website to view the details specific to each item.

For a large rectangular room, we recommend you consider getting a set of 2 seat or 3 seat sofas or even a comfortable corner sofa if you have the space. If you have a narrower room, look for a single 2.5 seat or 3 seat sofa, with one or two armchairs to complete the look.

If you have a small room, look for a sofa with a lower back as they take up less wall space and give a greater sense of space. Our retro Bern sofa is a great example of this.
